K2 - Football - South Korea - K League 2
The activity starts in K League 2 for the 2022 season. The opener match is between a K League 1 relegated Gwangju FC and newcomer to professional football Gimpo FC.
After two seasons in K League, Gwangju FC is back in K League 2 for the third time. In the previous two it has taken them two seasons to return to the top flight. With new manager Lee Jung-hyo, the Yellows have finish in the top five every time in K League 2, this time around that means at least a place in promotion playoff.
Gimpo FC, winner of semi-professional K3 league, after being approved made the switch to K League 2 and this match will mark the start of their journey in professional football. Just two foreigners in the squad, Japanese Mitsuru Marauoka and Bosnian Luka Juričić, newcomers to South Korea football. Gimpo FC highlight is the former FC Anyang coach Ko Jeong-woon.
This is the first match between them in K League 2, the precedent is a third round Korean FA Cup encounter in 2020 that finish 2-2 and Gwangju FC won in penalties to proceed to the next round.
Gimpo will be looking to at least replicate their previous record between them, but that cup match was held a month after the pandemic pause and Gwangju FC had a packed schedule. Gwangju FC is the stronger side here and should open with a good result to start in the right path their return to K League.
